Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant, so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of juries. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
